Presidency Reports 81% Drop in Terror-Related Deaths, Credits Stronger Security Collaboration
The Presidency says Nigeria has recorded an 81 percent reduction in terror-related fatalities since 2015, attributing the improvement to more effective counter-insurgency efforts and increased cooperation among security agencies and local communities.
In a statement shared on its official X page on Sunday, the Presidency revealed that over 13,000 terrorists were neutralised within the last year, while more than 124,000 fighters and their families have surrendered to security forces. It also disclosed that approximately 2.1 million internally displaced persons have returned to their communities, with reconstruction work ongoing in many previously affected areas.
According to the statement, the Federal Government has launched a Resettlement Scheme for Conflict-Affected Persons to support community rebuilding and help displaced citizens reintegrate into society.
The Presidency added that since 2023, security agencies through enhanced inter-agency coordination have intensified the pursuit, arrest, elimination, and prosecution of terrorrists linked to some of the country’s deadliest attacks. It noted that over 124 terrorists have been convicted since 2024, while others, including members of the Ansaru leadership and suspects in the 2022 Owo Church attack and the Yelwata reprisal killings in Benue, are currently facing trial.
It further highlighted the ongoing deployment of joint task forces, strengthened border surveillance with domestic and regional partners, victim compensation, permanent joint patrol operations, and intelligence-sharing with international allies as part of efforts to protect citizens and uphold national security.
